Organized by Fotografiska Shanghai in collaboration with Chengdu Contemporary Image Museum, with academic support from Jean-Luc Monterosso and special support by the Embassy of the Federative Republic of Brazil in Shanghai, the exhibition will feature iconic works spanning over 40 years of photography taken by Salgado. The exhibition invites the audiences to step into the world captured by Sebastião Salgado, Brazil’s most outstanding photographer, retrospecting his legendary career.
Through the Lens to Awaken Ecological and Humanistic Consciousness

Born in 1944 in Aimorés, Brazil, Salgado initially pursued economics before turning to photography, where he distinguished himself with his penetrating insight and unmistakable style.

His journeys took him across the globe, documenting pristine landscapes, wildlife, and indigenous communities with a deep empathy for both human suffering and dignity, as well as the splendor and fragility of the natural world. His works have been exhibited in leading cultural institutions worldwide and published in major international publications, establishing him as a paragon of contemporary photojournalism.

Salgado’s passing in May 2025 resonated deeply throughout the global art & cultural, environmental protection, and humanities communities. He famously stated, “What I want is the world to remember the problems and the people I photograph.”

This exhibition is not only a retrospective of his artistic achievements but also an act of continuing his legacy, leveraging the power of imagery to awaken public consciousness about our natural ecosystems, social issues, and shared humanity. The exhibition will comprehensively review Salgado’s illustrious career, focusing particularly on images captured in Brazil and around the world, reflecting his profound insight into his homeland Brazil as well as the plight that people and nature are confronted with.
