绘画是一种感觉，而不是理解。就像郭燕，很难说她在绘画基本语言或技法层面上有什么突破，或者说她用了多少心思去试图究明它，但我们不得不承认，郭燕对绘画是很有感觉的，这种感觉不是来自于技法或手艺，而是源自她对于绘画作为一种表征关系或话语范式的自觉，而且她还拿捏得如此到位。
不知是不是与郭燕的女性身份有关，她似乎总是在画梦，而且常常是双重的梦境。如果说，当人们被浮在喧嚣的都市机器上空为一重梦境的话，那么上空中的人物本身就在睡梦中无疑是第二重梦境。或许，在弗洛伊德、荣格等诸多心理学家的笔下，梦被书写为性，压抑，及欲望等等，但郭燕笔下的梦，却更多是焦虑，死寂，无处着落的，甚至残忍的，恐惧的，仿佛一个个消费和被消费后的“尸体”。
按照梅洛•庞蒂的逻辑，重要的自然不是这些身体及其背后的这样一个庞大的消费容器，而是郭燕是怎么表现的，以及她为什么这么去表现。正是在这个意义上，郭燕绘画的意义不在于将现实裸呈出来，而是试图由此有所超越，试图从欲望的丛林现实中摆脱出来。因而，她总是在漂浮中，在梦境中，在挣扎中，在两难中，……这样一个形而上学的赋予或强加是如此之难，亦是如此地不合时宜，更是如此地充满了张力。在这里，绘画与现实其实是一体的。
