Zhou Yi
Born and grew up in Beijing, China. He immigrated with his family to the United States in 1991 and lived there for 14 years. He received a Bachelor’s degree from the Cooper Union School of Art, a Master’s degree in painting from Tyler School of Art and attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He returned to China in 2005 for a teaching offer from the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing. For the last five years he devoted his time in meeting the demands of art education reform, introducing cross disciplinary foundation courses such as Josef Albers color study and Bauhaus inspired 3 dimensional design to a still much specialized master-apprentice education system. His book “Studies on Color Perception” will be published by Jilin Publishing this year.
In China, he has completed a mural commission for the Forbidden City and participated in numerous group exhibitions including C5Art in Sanlitun, Today Art International Gallery, Songzhuang Shangpu Art Museum in Beijing and Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Art in Guangzhou.
He is responsible for the curatorial work of several exhibitions in Beijing and Shanghai, among those Blank 2007 and 2008, a series of international exhibitions involving more than 50 artists and architects from Europe, U.S and Asia, collaborating with Chinese craftsman and fabricators. The exhibitions opened in a variety of formal, commercial and experimental venues, among those museum space, shopping malls, theater and art fair. During this two year period, he conducted over a dozen interviews published by Beijing Youth Weekly, introducing young artists and architects both from East and West to the Chinese public.
In 2009 he was asked by artist and architect Ai Weiwei to join his team of staff, most recently completing the research, writing and installation of the Intervention at Mies Van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona, Spain.
