董小明是一个集行政管理、展览策划和艺术创作于一身的人。而这种特殊的处境不但造成了他特有的艺术思考和艺术创作方式，也促成了他与都市水墨的不解之缘。
从董小明的一系列都市水墨创作来看，其基本艺术图式更多得益于他对当代都市的积极观察与迁想妙得。在这当中，一些现代摄影作品与西方现代艺术对他也有很大的启发。因此，他的水墨都市作品是比较多变的，其中既有较为具像的，也有半具像与抽象的。
其次，在具体的创作中，他还巧妙地把所谓“写”与“做”结合了起来。不过，与过分偏激的水墨画家不同，他既不简单拒绝“做”的方式，也不简单排斥“写”的方式，而是将两者融会贯通，并使之天衣无缝。这的确是非常难得的。
再其次，在强调写意特点的前提下，他还大胆将影像与装置的因素大胆借鉴到了水墨创作之中。他此次参展的作品就充分显示了这一特点。
我当然还可以举出其他特点来，但以上三点足以表明：当董小明先生着意将传统与现代、东方与西方、具有手工特点与具有科技特点的艺术进行嫁接时，他的审美理想显然超越了纯属个人风格演变的范畴，因而具有深远的意义。

Dong Xiaoming is both an ink-painter and a social activist in the circle，which may be a special situation that inspired him in ink-painting art of thinking model and style.
From his works people may feel an optimistic and clear consideration and observation on the metropolis life we are living，and that modern art and photographic art is a strong inspiration for him. So we can see his style which mostly is changeable and a semi-objectivism. That is perfect merging, a pretty sound skill.
He also borrows video and device art into his works to emphasize his liberalstyle, which we may see from the works in the exhibition.
Sure for me it is easy to point out some other features of the painter’s grafting between the tradition and the modern, between the east and west, between the manual and technical. And I’d like to say his esthetics is far beyond individual style, and is far-reaching.
