My Statement
By Gu Wenda
I have been thinking over Mr. Gu’s Dictionary of Another Simple Chinese Characters since the middle of 90s and I think it is a large-scale dictionary-like work series. And I produced an idea that it is not merely a dictionary but also a thesaurus. At least I intend to do so.
There are three reasons which lead me to that desire:One, I am desirable to create out of the work series based on wrongly written or mispronounced characters since 80s a new revise sort which is both art pieces and a attempt to promote Chinese character, which have never emerged in the history; Two, I try to transform single Chinese character to form new word as English language;Three, the words I created is simple and easy to be understood, to be remembered and to be used, everyone even he /she is illiterate could understand and master them easily.
Most of Chinese calligraphers prefer traditional Chinese character, or cursive hand, or official script or seal character in a regular criterion of aesthetics. And the 5 decades of promotion of simple Chinese character since the founding of the Republic, it has already become popular among all the Chinese, particularly within the country, yet it seems the character reform movement had made no a little bit impact on calligraphy and traditional characters are still taken as the orthodox. I try to combine two single characters to be a word by using both radicals. So I’d like to say it’s a Chinese character revolution rather than merely calligraphic art of a sort for art enjoyment.
