邵戈的艺术是“现代水墨”蓬勃思潮的有机组成部分。首先,他在这些年水墨活动中是一个积极的参与者和推动者。他认定水墨变革是一种需要为之付出努力的事业,和其他一些画家所付出的公益性劳动一样,他编书出书、办展交流,以思想主义的期冀和热情成为画坛活跃的一员。
邵戈在水墨语言上重视的是黑、白、灰的效果,在许多画家那里,“黑”与“白”是主要的语言要素,黑白关系是主要的结构关系,而邵戈则特别地看重了“灰”,用“灰”色作为作品整体的背景,使画面上的形象在这个背景中生发与运动,这种语言方式一方面使艺术主题得到恰如其份的表示,渲染了基本的氛境,另一方面则使黑和自在对比中更加明显地形成尖锐的视觉要素。除了留用纸质的白色之外,邵戈还在画中运用了粉色的白,那些分布在结构中的白色亮点,形成醒目的精神化的光斑,使黑、白、灰构成的世界具有丰富的意味。
为了使有限的水墨的水墨语言的单纯中显出丰富性,邵戈还拉开了黑、白、灰的肌理效果。他画中的“灰"通常是用水多而且作透明的渲染,有一种优美的亚光效果,而着力用黑之处则采用综合技法,使黑色的肌理呈现强烈的表现性。他的作品基本上不用颜色或极少地用色,但却有一种色彩的气氛,这种色彩感是精神性的体现。

I’d like to mention Shao Ge because I think he is one of the most important modern ink-painter in the country. He is not only an active painter but also member who is always active to promote Chinese ink-painting forward, considering it is necessary to every painter to devote much to the transformation movement of ink-painting in our age as a social public benefit activity, by publishing books, holding exhibitions and the kind.
Shao Ge attach much attention to the black, white, gray as a big number of painters, to form his major structure of work, particularly the gray which is often used as background of his work. I think it is proper for his to emphasize his subject and the black and white often forms sharp visual contrast in his pieces. The white he likes to use, including the paper white space, pink white, eye-catching white dots which form faculae to indicate the rich spiritual world.
In order to make the limited ink showing rich, Shao Ge used to make a wide space amongst white. Gray is usually used for a transparent rendering that is beautiful. Black is treated by integrated skills and is strong in performance. He seldom uses colors but we may feel a strong color sense sent from his pieces perhaps that is the light of spirit.
