王嘉伟的艺术风格,几乎完全脱离了油画的趣味。如果说尚扬他们那代人的绘画是在努力完成中西文化间的某种融合,那么王嘉伟的艺术则干脆放弃了西方的色彩,或者说是以中国画的水墨方式来稀释与溶化西方的概念。我始终觉得,这是王嘉伟在语言上的突破,也是王嘉伟在尚扬他们那代人之后的一种发展。相比某些艺术家只是继承前辈的风格,王嘉伟更加注重的还是精神,是从前辈那里继承下来勇于开拓的探索精神。当然,王嘉伟的工作之所以能够有这样的彻底性,背景还有时代的原因,是因为二十世纪更加开放的全球化背景,促进了各民族之间文化的自省,从而使王嘉伟这些更加年轻的中国艺术家跳出原来中西调和的历史节奏,走向身份意识确认的更深层。
关于在油画材料中从事水墨画质感的试验,王嘉伟并没有跟别人做过什么解释。但是,当他向我描述起他小时候在四川的生活经历,尤其是说到经常到江边游戏的场景时,我深感了一种地域气质的影响。我不敢说是那贯穿于王嘉伟意识深层的潺潺流水唤醒了他对水墨的情感,但有一点似乎可以肯定,那就是四川天气的那种潮湿,跟王嘉伟敏感于水墨的表现一定有着内在关联。难怪他要在作品上刻意强化那种墨水渗透,层层焦化,直至呈现出糜烂的气息。这实际上跟四川的霉雨之间有着某种割舍不断的联系。生存的经验是艺术表达的基础,但更大的基础还在于文化经验的积累。有着研究生履历的王嘉伟当然不是一个只注重于个人感受的艺术家,他的知识修养与他的文化视野结合起来,必然会使他在更大的文化关系中寻找价值坐标。

Hardly we can regard Wang Jiawei’s style is in the oil-painting in the tradition, he differed from those as Shang Yang’s which try best to absorb the western skills and concept in arts, he simply give it up and comes to Chinese ink-painting, a significant development after Shang Yang generation. Or we may perhaps say that Wang Jiawei prefers to self-spirit rather than any tradition passed on. This is a crashing painter who lives in the open environment of China, facing internationalist culture conditions, owning deeper self-examination consciousness among various cultures, and younger.
Upon his ink-painting experiment of materials, he never said more, yet, when he described to him his childhood experience in Sichuan, the game by the river, I felt that this painter is impacted by his local regional culture deeply. Although I dare not it is just that great landscape in his hometown draw him into ink-painting art, I am sure that the internal relationship of the humid weather in Sichuan, his hometown between the painter’s personality and his art has made much compact on the painter. Therefore, no wonder why he always stresses on the infiltration of ink in his work so strong that he often has it sending a rotten sense, much alike the continuous rain in Sichuan Basin. Any way, for any painter, personal experience of living must the base of his creation in art. Wang Jiawei, with MFA, is a painter who focuses not only on personal experience, but on wide cultural view and art values.
