We are pleased to announce that the solo exhibition of Tong Yanrunan, "About Face", will continue to 8 October 2008.
Tong Yanrunan was born in 1977 in Jiujiang, China and lives and works in Hangzhou. He is a graduate of the China Academy of Arts, and currently teaches there as a lecturer in painting. He is a member of the Chinese Artists Association. His work is a sustained investigation into the nature of perception and the construction of identity.
In a large series of small paintings collectively titled Manjuelong Comrades Tong Yanrunan has documented most of the people that live in the small farming village of Manjuelong near Hangzhou. None of these works describe the sitter with anything like precision, and yet each and every one of them gives the appearance of being true. Tong¹s interpretation of the likeness to true nature, rather than superficial appearance, gives each of these works its own very special quality. It is the very lack of detail, and in particular in the treatment of the eyes, that helps us to recognize the things that make each of these people who they are.
We urge all that have not seen this series of works to visit us at Osage Singapore from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00am to 7:00pm before the close of the exhibition.
