这个团体在2000年组建于意大利的博洛尼亚,成员是Anna Rispoli(艺术家、表演者)、Anna de Manincor(艺术家、影像制作人)、Massimo Carozzi(艺术家、声效设计师)。

ZimmerFrei is a collective of artists whose practice is located on the crossways of cinema, theater, music and performance. Melting formal languages, the group produces kaleidoscopic sonic and visual works, combining each time diverse inspiration, practices and technologies into an original project. The group originates in Bologna in 2000 and is composed by Anna Rispoli (artist and performer), Anna de Manincor (artist and videomaker), Massimo Carozzi (artist and sound designer). In 2008 ZimmerFrei are invited to Manifesta7, the contemporary art Biennial touring each time to a different country within Europe and showing this year for the first time in Italy.

Renovating a long-term cooperation with critic and indipendent curator Bruno Di Marino, the Beijing based Italian art project space offiCina presents due video works by ZimmeFrei entitled Panorama Roma and Panorama Bologna. In these panoramas the same ‘device’ decodes the space of diverse cities and the characters that inhabit them.

With regard to these works Bruno Di Marino writes:

The idea of these panoramas does not only derive from the creative exigency of finding an ideal connection with five centuries of artistic representations, and to translate into images the urban and historical landscape of some Italian cities. There is also a will to dramatize this landscape, to liven it with a number of actions, micro-events, movements and possible plots. For this purpose ZimmerFrei has created a special cinematic device that allows a camera mounted on it to rotate 360° in exactly an hour. The circular panoramas in these videos were filmed in different Italian squares (Piazza del Popolo in Rome, Piazza Maggiore in Bologna) and record a series of actions filmed in the space of a few hours and sped up in editing to last a few minute only. On the one hand there are weather and light changes, days shifting into nights and nights into days, passers-by walking in front of the lens. On the other are staged actions, performed slowly enough to be fully recorded by the camera. Rather than actions they are proper happenings, to which the artists take part, as well as other performers and the unaware audience. The time alteration, the gap between two dimensions that come into conflict - namely the natural flow of time and the artificial time of the many small events and narrations created by the actions of the performers – is in fact a common feature of ZimmerFrei’s aesthetics. In those experiments different expressive modes come together and become one whole: from painting...to cinema (besides landscape painting, it is also mainly experimental films’ technique of time lapse), from theatre to dance (a stylized narration of gestures and movements) till contemporary music (sounds, words and noises form an additional narrative level).

In Panorama Roma (produced by Monitor Gallery in Rome), ZimmerFrei were looking for a place with a 360° view, a place in the city where it is possible to see the curve of the horizon. Therefore they chose Piazza del Popolo (People’s Square) because it has the name of the people but is located exactly at the crossroads of those places symbolizing power. Another reason to choose it is that it seems symmetrical and in fact is oblique, because sun crosses it entirely and street lamps on it light up or switch off for reasons unknown to any rational mind and also to Rome municipal government. Panorama Bologna is a video portrait of the city of Bologna produced for the festival Bè-Bologna Estate (Bologna Summer) 2005 consisting of a big public set that involved and took up Piazza Maggiore (the city’s main square) for a whole day of 24 hours.

During the screening, offiCina will introduce to the viewers the work of ZimmerFrei and present an essay by Bruno Di Marino that analyses the Panoramas with reference to the concept of square.
