Surasi Kusolwong's remarkable UCCA installation focuses on consumerism in a way of human activity that breaks with classic form. People can touch and participate in the artwork in a way that normally never happens in exhibition spaces. By reversing this system of values and the hierarchy of the art market, Kusolwong enables a fever around his work to create a commitment and exchange between art and visitor.

In honor of Popoli Documentary Film Festival’s Fiftieth anniversary, the China Italian International Image Documentary Forum opens in Beijing with a special retrospective program The Feeling of Being There: Seven Years of Documentary Cinema (1958-1965) only at UCCA, presenting eight films that changed documentary-making history: the Maysles Brothers ’With Love from Truman’ and ‘Meet Marlon Brando’, as well as ‘Terminus’, the most famous English short film of the Sixties.

La Cinémathèque de la Danse, based in Paris, is a unique archive of all movement-related iconography from the early twentieth century to the present day. In collaboration with UCCA, they will show Avant-garde dance films created by choreographer like Merce Cunningham and Martha Graham, from New York to Europe; and the director of La Cinémathèque de la Danse Patrick Bensard will introduce theopening session on May 6th with his own film Lucinda Childs.

His novels Plateforme (Platforme) and La possibilité d’une le (The Possibility of an Island), both published in China, earned him a reputation; both are considered to have helped introduce a new style to the French literary scene. Pecha Kucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 by architects Klein Dytham as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images in 20 seconds. Started in Beijing in 2006, it’s held once each season. This session in UCCA will have a focus on digital art, guest speakers will talk about the fascination and possibilities creating using new digital technology and media.

Chinese American traveler Gu Yue and documentary producer Liu Chang hitchhiked from Beijing to Berlin in the summer of 2009. On the 16,000km journey through China, Central Asia and Europe, over three months they accepted rides from 88 people on different vehicles, including an old Uyghur woman’s tricycle, an Iraqi farmer’s tractor, and gypsy nomads’ carriage. The travel tale has a romantic twist as Gu Yue’s girlfriend Yika was waiting for him at the end of the journey.

【Culture Program】UCCA-NGO Series 1: Aizhixing: Sex, AIDS and Discrimination in China

In this NGO session, we will introduce Aizhixing and screen a short documentary about Julia, a Chinese college student who became the first person on Chinese television to openly discuss contracting the HIV/AIDS virus through sex - “Julia’s Story” (2005, 30mins). We will follow up with a discussion of AIDS and discrimination in China with Academy Award winning film director, Ruby Yang, and AIDS advocate and founder of Aizhixing, Wan Yanhai.

After the first successful cooperation with CAI, we are now inviting migrant students from the Xiwang Zhixing School to visit the UCCA's latest exhibition. The children will have fun as they tour through this special art discovery. After the guided tour, a workshop will be led by young artists Yuan Yuan and Pan Lin, whose exhibition True False Objects is now presented at the UCCA.

One Day in 2004 picks up some of the elements in Sanjie, both in external form and internal psyche. The difference is that One Day in 2004 is even harder to describe in words. She, the young girl, is now more introverted, more private, more spiritual. She continues to bear our memory, like a replay of historical images. It is as if everything has been left to memory, but at the same time hovering around us nearby. She seems to be changing and growing up around us, yet we are unaware. She is abstract and yet real. My relationship with her is unified and yet separate. Watching her grow up, I am often lost in the logical relationship between me and her – her in me and me in her.

At the end of 2009, the artist Ling Jian returned to Beijing from Germany and held exhibitions of his new work, drawing fresh interest in the Chinese contemporary art world. The portraits, representative of his work, act as metaphors for contemporary Chinese material culture and awareness of the development of consumerism. UCCASTORE is now launching a new limited edition based on Ling Jian’s 2007 oil painting Hero No.2.
