Sotheby’s Hong Kong 2009 Autumn auction series at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre began with the two-day sale of two outstanding private cellars - The Classic Cellar from a Great American Collector III on 3 October and An Exceptional Cellar from a Private American Collector on 4 October, realising an exceptional combined total of HK$61,536,849 / US$7,889,340, well in excess of the high estimate (HK$47,817,400 / US$6,130,436). Of note, there was active participation of online bidders following Sotheby’s introduction of live online bidding to its Hong Kong wine sales this season. Over the two days, online bidders competed for 56% of the lots offered.
Serena Sutcliffe, MW, Head of Sotheby’s International Wine department, commented after the sales: “The success of our two-day wine sale shows Sotheby’s strength in sourcing outstanding single-owner wine collections of impeccable provenance and perfect condition. This reinforces Sotheby’s leading position in achieving the highest prices in the wine auction marketplace, confirming the trusted expertise of Sotheby’s Wine Specialists. In both sales, superb and rare offerings were acquired by collectors across Asia – Asian buyers represented 99% of buyers in this two-day sale. In Sotheby’s first year of selling wine in Asia, Hong Kong has become Sotheby’s most important wine centre, ahead of very successful auctions in New York and London. Sotheby’s have exciting plans to build on this momentum to bring to the market top collections in 2010.”
