罗院长:三段话

语言的触点

维特根斯坦说:“想象一种语言,意味着想象一种生活形式”——我想他是对的,这也对应了我对艺术的思考。由此看来,任何画面,都离不开基本的绘画语言:从点、线、面、色彩、构图……到最后的呈现,艺术家实际上是用自己的语言,来言说他对于人、情感、自然、社会、历史和文化的理解。而这种言说方式,一方面来自真实的体验,另一方面来自虚拟和想象。艺术正是在这两者之间,找到特有的表达方式,并最终成为触及创作的出发点。

编织的文化

艺术家的思考,往往从最直接的创作出发,也最终表现在作品之中。那些片段式的、灵光乍现的、突如其来或长期积淀的想法,也许是在一种无意识中产生。但我时常思考,在表达的同时,我们是因为什么选择了这种语言方式,而不是其他?在看似感性的艺术创作中,是否也暗示了我们对文化的理解、吸纳、解读、质疑、借用或再现?而这一切,实际上就是我们自己正身处其中的文化情境,它在错综复杂和潜移默化里决定了艺术家最初的文化身份和最终的表达方式。

正如萨皮尔所说的那样:“语言是不脱离文化而存在的,他是社会流传下来的、决定我们生活面貌的风俗和信仰的总体。”

显现的思想

并非出于对符号和形式的追求,但艺术家总是在不断追寻自我的、特有的艺术语言。就像塞尚在一个杯子里找到了静物的生命,而梵高在光影中找到了色彩一样——我在中国传统和民间的文化里找到了部分可以借鉴的元素,也在对现实和想象中的农民、及其赖以生存的土地上,找到了人文关怀里闪烁的主题。对同一题材和画面的不断言说,并在言说中转换并强化出属于自己的语言方式,或许就是我想表达的思想。我依然相信:在每个艺术家创作的背后,都有思想的轨迹可寻。

Inspirational Spot of Language

Wittgenstein once said: “To imagine a language means to imagine a form of life”. I think he is right. This also corresponds to my thinking on art. As far as this is concerned, no pictures can do without basic painting language: the artist actually expounds his understanding of human, emotion, nature, society, history and culture with his own language from point, line, surface, color and composition to the final presentation. Moreover, the way of speaking comes from real experience as well as virtualization and imagination. Art finds its unique way of expression just between the two and ultimately makes it the initial point that inspires artistic creation.

Woven Culture

An artist’s reflection usually starts from direct artistic creation and is eventually embodied in his works. Those fragmentary, unexpected, sudden or long-term accumulated ideas may arise in unconsciousness. However, for many times I wonder why we choose certain language approach to express ourselves rather than other approaches? Whether the seemingly sentimental artistic creation implies our understanding, absorbing, unscrambling, questioning, borrowing and representing of culture? And all this is in fact the culture which we live in that decides the artist’s initial questioning status and final expression approach in an intricate and subtle way.

This is just as what Sapir once said, “Existing with culture and being handed down from the community, language is the unity which decides customs and beliefs in our lives.

Revealed Thought

Although not out of the pursuit of symbols and forms, artists are always chasing after their own individual and unique artistic language, which is in the same way as Cezanne found life in a cup while Van Gogh found color in light and shadow. I noticed elements I can refer to in Chinese tradition and folk culture. In addition to it, I found the subject of humanistic care in real and imagined peasants and the land they depend on for survival. Perhaps, the thought I want to express is to repeatedly expound the same subject and frame, and, in speeches, to transform and strengthen one’s own language approaches. I’m still a believer in the idea that there’s traceable track of thought behind each artist’s creation.
